Post-Operative Instructions for Crown and/or Bridge Restorative Treatment

During your appointment today one or more of your teeth was prepared for a permanent crown or bridge restoration.  A temporary crown (acrylic) was fabricated for each prepared tooth.  Temporary crowns are cemented with interim strength cement to allow for easy removal at your next appointment.

If your temporary crown should become loose or dislodged.  Please keep the temporary, if possible, and contact our office.  We will have you return to the office to have the temporary crown recemented or replaced.  DO NOT EAT OR CHEW ANYTHING HARD OR STICKY ON YOUR TEMPORARY CROWN. Once you receive your permanent crown, you will be able to eat normally.

Today the treatment area was numbed with anesthesia. Please refrain from drinking hot liquids or chewing until the numbing effect has completed worn off (approx. 30 minutes – 4 hours).

Crown and/or bridge restorations may change how your teeth come together, your bite.  It is important that you discuss how your bite feels with the doctor and adjustment can be made to ensure good occlusion.  These adjustments are typical with any crown/bridge procedure.

You may experience sensitivity in the affected area for 24 hours to 2 weeks.  Every patient is different.  If your tooth has not received root canal treatment prior to crown restoration, you may experience temporary sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures on the tooth.  This is normal and will decrease over time.  You may also have sore gum tissue around the affected tooth.  This is also normal and can be typically eased with the use of over the counter pain medication such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

If prescription medications were prescribed please follow the instructions on the label those given to you by the doctor to the letter.  If you experience any unexpected side effects, please discontinue use and contact our office for assistance.

You may brush and floss normally after the numbness has completed worn off.  You will want to gently brush the affected area for the first 48 hours after treatment.

If you have received treatment today for an implant supported restorative crown, it is important that you continue to follow the crucial oral care instructions during and after restorative treatment that you received from your implant surgeon.  If you have any questions, you may contact your surgeon for additional information.

Please do not hesitate to contact our office with any questions or concerns.  If you should require urgent assistance after hours, please call:  407-529-5681
